Men's Hockey Takes Exhibition at Union, 5-2

Shane Sellar's three-point game leads Engineers in tune-up contest

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Graduate student Shane Sellar scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 5-2 exhibition victory over Union College, at Messa Rink. The Engineers open the regular season next weekend with a two-games against Bowling Green at the Houston Field House.

Sellar answered an early Union goal with the first of his two on the day, at 12:08 of the opening frame. The unassisted tally knotted the score at 1-1.

Senior Ture Linden then gave the visitors the lead for good with under a minute to play in the period, with assists going to Sellar and fellow graduate student Justin Addamo.

Senior Jakob Lacka pushed the RPI lead to 3-1 at 4:15 of the second, with the lone helper going to classmate Ottoville Leppanen.

A Union power play goal at 9:54 of the second brought the hosts to within 3-2. Nic Petrouolo picked up the marker, with Brandon Estes claiming an assist.

Sophomore Jake Gagnon netted a late second period goal to push the Engineers' lead back to two (4-2), before Sellar potted an unassisted, insurance tally in the third to cap the scoring.

RPI split goaltending duties, with each netminder playing a full period. Graduate student Linden Marshall made six saves in the first, sophomore Brett Miller had six in the second and freshman Jack Watson turned away three in the third.

The Dutchmen saw four goaltenders see ice time, including Garrett Nieto, who started and made one save in the first period.
