POUGHKEEPSIE, .N.Y.  – Violet Munnelly and Allie Foote scored second half goals to lead the Vassar College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday afternoon Gordon Field. With the win, the Brewers improve to 9-5-1 overall (4-3-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 4-6-4 (1-5-2 Liberty League).
Freshman
Brooke Miller turned in RPI's only attempt of the first half, when her free kick from the left found its way into the arms of Vassar goalkeeper Claire Mackenzie in the seventh minute.
Neither side was able to generate much in terms of scoring chance throughout the rest of the opening frame, outside of a handful of shots from distance. Vassar saw Noelle Namba fire wide 30 yards out in the 34th minute, before Maddison Bouggess forced RPI sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Wampner into a diving save in the 41st minute.
The Brewers took a 6-1 shot advantage into halftime, including 2-1 on goal.
Early in the second half, Wampner came up with a penalty kick save on an attempt by Skylar Herrera-Ross, who low left try was scooped up by Wampner, keeping the game level at 0-0.
RPI looked to have scored in the 63rd minute, but the play was ruled offside after
Whitney Wisnom headed a cross towards the right post that was tapped into the goal by freshman
Veronica Martinez de Pinillos.
Vassar was the given another chance from the spot after a shot was blocked off the line by senior
Meghan Huang. Munnelly stepped and buried the shot from the spot in the 66th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
Foote then doubled the Brewers lead in the 79th minute after sustained pressure in the RPI penalty area. A partial clear popped out to the right corner of the box and Foote was there to strike a ball into the left side of the goal.
Rensselaer had a couple of late opportunities to get on the board, but could not sneak a shot past Mackenzie, who earned the clean sheet with two saves. Wampner had nine stops at the other end of the field.
The Engineers conclude their regular season schedule at Clarkson University on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30pm. Vassar travels to Ithaca College on Saturday (2pm).
