No. 25 Men's Soccer Settles for Draw with WNE

Golden Bears net 90th minute equalizer, but Engineers home unbeaten run moves to 21

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Josh Gaudiano scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to help the 25th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Western New England University, on Tuesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the tie, the Engineers are now 7-1-2, while the Golden Bears move to 7-2-2.

Freshman goalkeeper Colin Waltsak hauled down RPI senior Billy Chissoe in the 12th minute, earning a yellow in the process. With the foul being committed in the penalty area, Gaudiano (Manhattan Beach, CA / Mira Costa), stepped up and drill a shot in the corner of the net to give the hosts the lead.

In the 14th minute, Golden Bears sophomore Malik Serriser (Ludlow, MA / Ludlow) took a half volley that was labeled for the low left corner, but Rensselaer senior keeper Luke Brezak (Camano Island, WA / The Overlake School) stopped and held the attempt.

Chissoe nearly made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute, but his attempt was kept out by Watlsak.

Both teams had chances in the second half, including one from Chissoe in the 63rd minute. Running onto a ball from junior Ben Kogan (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa), he ripped a shot, first time, that Waltsak just got a piece off to keep out of the net.

Just three minutes later, Gaudiano rushed up the left flank on the counter, before cutting in and curling a right-footed shot wide of the right post.

Waltsak was sent off in the 85th minute after he took out Gaudiano just outside the penalty area. The second yellow left the visitors with just 10 on the field.

Western New England equalized in the 90th minute, when Chris Allen (Somers, CT / Somers) flicked the ball from the middle of the box to the right side of the six, where Serriser pounced and sent the ball into the ride side of the RPI net.

The Engineers turned on the press at the end of regulation and overtime and wound up outshooting WNE, 9-0, in the extra session, including a number of opportunities at a winner.

Kogan saw his header flash wide left of the goal in the 100th minute, before he got on the end of a Billy Chissoe through ball in the 103th minute, only to see his shot stopped by new Western New England goalkeeper Ryan Suprin (Clinton, MA / Xavier).

Brezak (7-1-2) finished with six saves, while seeing his shutout streak come to an end at 539:29. Suprin picked up the victory in goal for Western New England, making two saves in relief.

RPI is back in action on Friday evening, when it hosts Union College at East Campus Stadium (6pm). The Golden Bears host Curry on Saturday (12pm).
