TROY, N.Y. – Senior Nathan Burke scored two goals, including the overtime-winner to lead the Bowling Green State University men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in non-league action at the Houston Field House on Saturday night. With the win, the Falcons improve to 1-0-1 on the young season, while the Engineers drop to 0-1-1.
Burke broke a 2-2 tie at 1:40 of the extra session, deking his way past a pair of RPI defenders and slipping a backhanded shot past Engineers graduate student netminder
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) for his second goal of the night. The 3-on-3 tally drew a lone assist from freshman blueliner Eric Parker (Calgary, AB / Okotoks).
Bowling Green opened the scoring at 5:33 of the first, when senior Gabriel Chicoine (St. Dominique, PQ / Norwich University) delivered a stretch pass onto the tape of sophomore Ethan Scardina (South Surrey, BC / Nanaimo Clippers), who raced in and scored on a breakaway. Parker picked up the secondary helper on the game's first goal.
The Engineers pulled even at 10:23 of the opening frame, on a power play goal by graduate student
Shane Sellar (Carlisle, PA / Dartmouth College). A shot from the right point by junior
Simon Kjellberg (Nashville, TN / Dubuque Fighting Saints) was stopped by Bowling Green junior netminder Zack Rose (Paradise, Newfoundland / Victoria Grizzlies), but the rebound fell to Sellar for the tap-in finish. Junior
TJ Walsh (Shrewsbury, MA / Northeastern University) earned the second assist on Sellar's first Engineers goal.
The Falcons made it 2-1 at 18:57 of the second, on a rebound tally from Burke. Skating 4-on-4, senior Alex Barber (Dublin, OH / Central Illinois Flying Aces) took a shot that was turned away by Marshall, but Burke was there to stick home his first of two on the night.
Junior
Ryan Mahshie (Stoney Creek, ON / Brooks Bandits) brought the hosts level once again at 13:15 of the third, taking advantage of a strong fore-check from classmate
Zach Dubinsky (Highland Park, IL / Omaha Lancers), who disrupted the Falcons' breakout. Mahshie pounced on a loose puck and stuffed it past Rose for his first goal of the season.
Rose (1-0-1) had 20 saves on the night, while Marshall (0-1-1) turned away 19 at the other end of the ice. The Engineers went 1 for 5 on the power play, with Bowling Green finishing 0 for 4.
RPI is back on the ice next weekend, when it hosts Canisius College for a two-game series. The Falcons battle Miami University in a home-and-home non-league series on October 22 and 23, beginning in Oxford.
