Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Max Andreev recorded five points to lead the 13th-ranked Cornell University men's hockey team to an 11-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. With the win, the Big Red improve to 5-1-0 overall (3-1-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 5-5-1 (3-3-0 ECAC Hockey).
Andreev scored four goals, including a hat trick to pace the Cornell attack. Matt Stienburg added a goal and three assists, while six others had multiple points. The Engineers saw nine different players notch points, including goals from
Rory Herrman,
Ture Linden and
TJ Walsh.
Ben Berard opened the scoring at 4:22 of the first period, claiming a loose puck in the slot and firing a shot past RPI goaltender
Linden Marshall.
RPI pulled even at 5:54, when Herrman flipped home a rebounds from just outside the crease. Assists on the tally went to
Simon Kjellberg and
Jack Brackett.
Cornell the potted four straight goals to end the period, taking a 5-1 lead into the first intermission.
After Zach Tupker made it 6-1 at 3:06 of the second, Linden brought the visitors within 6-2 at 7:17.
Ryan Mahshie and
Jake Johnson collected the helpers on Linden's fifth goal of the season.
The Big Red then netted two goals in a span of 18 seconds to push their lead to 8-2 before the end of the middle frame.
Stienberg tallied in the opening minute of the third, with Walsh answering two minutes later a redirection tally – his second of the season.
Anthony Baxter and
Justin Addamo earned the assists on RPI's third goal.
Later in the third, the Big Red capped the scoring with goals by Andreev and Tim Rego.
Cornell goaltender Joe Howe finished with 23 saves, while
Linden Marshall wound up with 19 stops at the other end of the ice.
RPI is back in action on Friday, when it hosts Long Island University at the Houston Field House (7pm). The Big Red hosts Brown and Yale next weekend.
