TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Patrick Mahoney has been recognized with a national honor, earning D3hoops.com Preseason All-America Fourth Team recognition. The teams are chosen from previous years' post-season nominations.
A senior, Mahoney (Ossining, NY / Fordham Prep.) was a National All-America First Team selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) following the 2019-20 campaign, the most recent played due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The forward was one of eight individuals chosen that spring.
The NABCÂ East Region Player of the Year and an All-District First Team selection, Mahoney started all 29 games as a junior, averaging 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in 28.5 minutes. He also had 44 assists, 27 steals and four blocked shots while helping the team to a school record 24 wins (24-5) and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
He led the team in field goal attempts (365), field goals made (169) and scoring average, while ranking second in free throw attempts (87) and rebounding average. He had at least 15 points in 14 games with eight contests of at least 20 points. He was the team's top scorer nine times and collected team-highs in rebounds eight times. He registered four double-doubles.
A business and management major, Mahoney was named to the All-Liberty League First Team and the conference's Player of the Year. He was also honored as a D3hoops.com All-East Region First Team selection and named to the All-ECAC Second Team.
As a sophomore, Mahoney earned All-League Honorable Mention after averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds in 29.7 minutes per game. He also had 38 assists, 10 steals and three blocks as a starter in each of the team's 25 contests. He had at least 20 points four times in helping the Engineers, who are coached by
Mark Gilbride, reach the conference tournament.Â
Mahoney played 24 games as a freshman, averaging 3.7 points with 51 rebounds and 17 assists in 11.8 minutes per game.
Rensselaer begins the 2021-22 season on November 12-13 at the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament hosted by Nazareth College. The Engineers face Medaille College in the first round (6pm) and either the host Golden Flyers or Cazenovia College the next afternoon (1pm or 3pm).
