Men's Basketball Scores 101 to Win Home Opener

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team shot 51.4% from the field and 15 student-athletes registered at least two points as the Engineers defeated SUNY Cobleskill 101-48 in a non-league game at East Campus Arena. RPI, which had 24 assists on 38 made baskets, improves to 4-0, while the Fighting Tigers drop to 0-6.

Junior Jonny Angbazo led Rensselaer with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting, along with seven rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal in 22 minutes. Senior Mason Memmelaar added 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals and Patrick Mahoney scored 10 points. He also had five rebounds and four assists. 

Cobleskill, which was held to 32.7% shooting, was led by Juwan Malone's 11 points and Mike McKoy's nine. Malone also had five rebounds, an assist and a block, while McKoy pulled down two boards and had a steal. Naphtali Regilus had a team-high seven rebounds and eight points on 3 of 6 shooting.

The visitors held a 13-11 lead at 11:41 of the first half, but the Engineers outscored them 33-13 the rest of the frame for a 44-26 lead at halftime. Cobleskill came out and scored the first two baskets of the second half but RPI countered with a 19-0 run and continued to increase its lead from that point. Brian Kelly had five points and Angbazo four in the spurt, which covered nearly eight minutes.

Rensselaer, which held a 49-28 rebounding advantage and a 48-24 margin in points in the paint, is back in action on December 3 when it hosts Hobart College in its Liberty League opener at 7:30pm. The Fighting Tigers play again on December 2 at Russell Sage College (7:30pm).
