Men's Hockey Falls Late to No. 18 NU, 2-1

Brackett nets first collegiate goal, but Huskies score twice in third

BOSTON, Mass.  – The 18th-ranked Northeastern University men's hockey team scored twice in the third period to earn a come-from-behind, 2-1, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena. With the win, the Huskies sweep the weekend series and improve to 11-4-1, while the Engineers drop to 6-7-2.

After an evenly-played, but scoreless, opening first period, the visitors got on the board first in the second. Sophomore James McIsaac (Winnipeg, MB / Brooks Bandits) found classmate Jack Brackett (Manassas, VA / Powell River Kings) flying up ice and he was able to tuck a shot between the legs of Northeastern sophomore netminder Devon Levi (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, PQ / Carleton Place) for his first collegiate goal at 6:36.

Two minutes later, senior Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland / Espoo Blues) sprung classmate Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA / Lone Star Brahmas) up the left wing boards, but his shot from the bottom of the left circle was kicked away by Levi.

The Huskies pulled even at 1-1, just 1:02 into the third on a shot from the left circle by junior Aidan McDonough (Milton, MA / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders). Stepping between a pair of defenders at the let point, he walked and ripped a shot over the right shoulder of RPI graduate student goaltender Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Helpers on the play went to junior Matt DeMelis (Hingham, MA / Youngstown Phantoms) and freshman Matt Choupani (Montreal, PQ / Des Moines Buccaneers).

RPI nearly took the lead back midway through the frame, but two missed chances from graduate student Justin Addamo (Auriers, France / Robert Morris) were followed by a shot from the middle of the slot from senior Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) that was tipped over the glass.

Choupani gave Northeastern the lead for good at 15:48, deking his way into the right circle, before cutting across the slot and lifting a backhanded shot past Marshall for his third goal of the season. DeMelis and McDonough claimed the helpers on the eventual game-winning tally.

The Engineers pulled Marshall with two minutes to play and drew a penalty to make it a 6-on-4 situation, but could not find the equalizing goal. Linden had the best chance to score, but his shot from the edge of the crease was kept out by Levi as the horn sounded.

Levi (11-4-1) had eight of his 21 saves in the first period, while Marshall (6-6-2) made nine of his 21 in the opening frame. The Engineers had the only power play of the game and were unsuccessful.

RPI is back on the ice next weekend, when it host No. 3 Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. The Huskies play a home-and-home with Providence next weekend.
