TROY, N.Y. – Graduate student
Justin Addamo scored the even game-winning goal and assisted on another to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Clarkson University, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-3-1 overall (3-1-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Golden Knights drop to 4-4-1 (0-2-0 ECAC Hockey).
Addamo (Aurieres, France / Robert Morris University) snapped a 1-1 tie at 9:29 of the third period, when he stuffed home the rebound of a shot from the top of the right circle by sophomore
Jack Agnew (Oakville, ON / Boston College). Junior
TJ Walsh (Shrewsbury, MA / Northeastern University) got the play started by carrying the puck into the zone, before dropping a pass off for Agnew at the point. His shot was stopped by Clarkson sophomore goaltender Ethan Haider (Maple Grove, MN / Sioux City Musketeers), but Addamo cleaned up the carom for his first RPI tally.
Less than two minutes later, Walsh earned his second helper on the night, when he found junior
Zach Dubinsky (Highland Park, IL / Omaha Lancers) at the front of the net for the marker. Haider nearly closed his pads in time, but the puck trickled to give the Engineers a 3-1 advantage.
Clarkson pulled Haider for an extra skater with over two minutes to play, but the Engineers held their ground to secure their third victory in the last four games.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring at 14:20 of the opening stanza on freshman Ryan Richardson's (Stittsville, ON / Fargo Force) second goal of the season. Graduate student Jack Jacome (Caledon, ON /Georgetown Raiders) picked up the lone assist on the tally.
RPI drew even on the power play at 12:03 of the second. Right off the draw, the Engineers moved the puck to the bottom of the right circle for graduate student
Shane Sellar (Carlisle, PA / Dartmouth College), who snapped a pass across the goal mouth to junior
Ryan Mahshie (Stoney Creek, ON / Brooks Bandits) for the one-time finish. Mahshie's fourth of the year came just seven seconds into the man advantage opportunity.
Graduate student
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) finished with 21 saves to improve to 5-2-1 on the year, while Haider (4-4-1) had 16 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI finished 1 for 2 on the power play, while successfully killing off all three Golden Knights opportunities.
RPI has now won two straight games against Clarkson for the first time since 2013, after losing eight consecutive contests in the series.
The Engineers return to action next weekend, when the travel to Colgate and Cornell on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. Clarkson hosts Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
