TROY, N.Y. - Senior Robert Reynolds set up the game's first goal six minutes into the second half and then sealed the win with a goal of his own and Ben Woelfinger saved all six shots he faced to lead the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament at East Campus Stadium.
The No. 5 seeded Saints improve to 11-6-1 and advance to play in Sunday's final against either No. 2 seeded Ithaca College or No. 6 seeded Skidmore College. RPI, the top seed, drops to 11-5-2.
Following a first half that featured five shots on goal with four coming from the Engineers, St. Lawrence broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute when senior Raphael Zoccolaro outran two defenders as well as Rensselaer goalkeeper
Luke Brezak to a long feed by Reynolds and chipped it in from 16 yards out. The play started in the defensive end following a rebound of a free kick attempt by the Engineers that ended up over the goal. Woelfinger played the ball short to a defender, who kicked it up to Roberts. The senior captain's feed from 50 yards out landed approximately 20 yards from goal, allowing Zoccolaro to run to the ball and get a right foot on it for his second of the year.
RPI applied pressure throughout the remaining time to generate numerous opportunities. A throw in deep in the offensive end with just under 10 minutes to play led to a number of chances, but Woelfinger eventually controlled the ball.
A minute later,
Gabe Terando served the ball into the box, where
Trevor Bisson put a head on it, but it went wide.
Paul Silva sent the ball back toward goal but hit the post and a try by
Julio Rodriguez hit a defender and the goalkeeper before being cleared out.
Two RPI chances minutes a minute apart a short time later were also denied and the Saints sealed the win with 45 seconds remaining when Reynolds chipped the ball past an oncoming Brezak and into the empty net from 30 yards out. Owen Lillis had the assist on the goal, the fifth of the season for Reynolds.
Rensselaer made a strong bid to take the lead early in the first half when Rodriguez, a freshman, sent a ball over the top to junior
Josh Gaudiano, who nearly had a 1v1 with the goalkeeper, but St. Lawrence senior captain Andrew Terhune slid in and knocked the ball away in the sixth minute.
Gaudiano generated another chance in the 29th minute when he broke through on a 1-on-2 and slid the ball across to Rodriguez as he was running down the left side. His left-footed try headed to the upper right corner of the net was saved by Woelfinger. The junior made a save on a
Trevor Bisson header off a corner kick about a minute later to keep the game scoreless.
A through-ball by the Engineers'
Michael Harten to
Paul Silva in the 32nd minute deflected to Woelfinger, who covered it. The best opportunity for St. Lawrence in the first half came six minutes later when a long ball up the right side led to a Marvin Sabanda chip toward Kyle Graber, who was rushing to goal, but it was headed out of bounds by Alex Garcia for a corner kick.
Woelfinger finished with four saves in the first 45 minutes, while RPI's
Luke Brezak had one stop in the first half and two in the game.
RPI had a 23-8 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
