Men's Hockey Drops Finale at Alaska, 4-1

Nanooks pull away in third period for home win; Take series 3-1

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Anton Rubstov and Antti Virtanen each collected a pair of assists to lead the University of Alaska-Fairbanks men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday night at Carlson Center. With the win, the Nanooks improve to 4-12-0, while the Engineers drop to 8-11-2.

Garrett Pyke netted the game's first goal at 14:45 of the opening frame. After winning an offensive zone draw, Pyke took a shot from the blue line that founds its way to the back of the net. Rubtsov and Virtanen earned the assists on the tally.

RPI tied the game at 1-1, midway through the second on a rocket of a shot from the top of the left circle by graduate student Justin Addamo. His third goal of the series and sixth of the year drew helpers from classmate Shane Sellar and sophomore Jakob Lee.

Less than two minutes later, the hosts retook the lead on a tally by Chase Dubois. Robstov and Harrison Israels were credited the assists on the go-ahead marker, which came at 11:43 of the stanza.

A wrap-around goal from Colin Doyle at 11:46 of the third gave the Nanooks a 3-1 lead, after RPI graduate student netminder Linden Marshall made the initial save.

Didrik Hembrant then added an empty-net marker with over three minutes to play to seal the victory for Alaska. Brady Risk won a defensive zone draw and Hembrant took the puck and skated up the middle of the ice, before flipping a shot into the open cage.

Gustavs Davis Grigals picked up the win in goal, stopping 31 shots on the night, while his counterpart, Marshall, had 22 saves. Rensselaer wound up 0 for 5 on the power play, with the Nanooks going 0 for 2.

The Engineers are now idle until December 30, when they host the University of Vermont at the Houston Field House (4pm). Alaska travels to Denver on December 31 and January 1.
