TROY, N.Y. – Graduate student
Anthony Baxter recorded three points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Princeton University, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-8-2 overall (4-4-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Tigers drop to 3-7-1 (2-4-0 ECAC Hockey).
RPI, which scored in every period, got the offense going at 8:10 of the opening frame, when senior
Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland / Espoo Blues U20) snapped home a shot from the right circle, after taking a feed from classmate and captain
Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA / Lone Star Brahmas). Baxter (Oakville, ON / UMass Lowell) collected the secondary helper on Leppanen's fourth of the season.
Baxter then doubled the Engineers' advantage at 15:59 of the first, burying a cross-crease feed from Linden. Moving the puck out of the right corner, Linden delivered the puck to left side for Baxter, who had crashed down from the left point. Leppanen also claimed an assist on Baxter's first RPI goal and ninth of his career.
Sophomore
Jack Brackett (Manassas, VA / Powell River Kings) pushed the RPI lead to 3-0 late in the second, when he redirected a point shot by Baxter past Princeton junior netminder Aidan Porter (Weston, MA / Vernon Vipers). Brackett steered the puck into the top right corner of the net.
A power-play goal by junior
Zach Dubinsky (Highland Park, IL / Omaha Lancers) gave the Engineers a 4-0 advantage at 1:25 of the third. Senior
Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) collected a failed clearing attempt at the right point and fired a shot towards goal that Dubinsky tipped home for his sixth tally of the season.
The Tigers broke up the shutout with 4:18 to play. Senior Mike Ufberg (Richboro, PA / Vernon Vipers) found a lane through traffic for his first goal of the year. The left point shot picked out the top right corner of the RPI net. Defensive partner and classmate Matthew Thom (Oakville, ON / Georgetown Raiders) was credited with the first assist, while freshman Alex Konovalov (Basking Ridge, NJ / Lone Star Brahmas) had the secondary.
RPI graduate student
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) made just 11 saves to pick up the win and improve to 7-7-2 on the year, while Porter (2-4-0) had 21 stops, before giving way to senior Jeremie Forget (Mascouche, PQ / Carleton Place), who had six.
The Engineers went 1 for 4 on the man advantage, with Princeton going 0 for 4.
Rensselaer is back on the ice next weekend, when it travels to Alaska-Fairbanks for four games in six days. Princeton visits Providence for a pair of non-league games next weekend.
