CANTON, N.Y. - Seniors Peter Koch, Jack Hennessey and Alex Mapstone each scored two goals to lead the No. 13 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on the Saints' Senior Day in the Liberty League regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.
Koch also recorded two assists, two ground balls and one caused turnover for the Scarlet and Brown. Eight other members of the Saints' squad got in on the scoring action, while Zach Prime won 17 of 21 from the face off circle. He had a season-best 11 ground balls.goalkeeper William Helm
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but
Ryan Cole scored three straight for the Engineers to tie the game at 3-3. Hennessey tallied his second of the game with six seconds to play in the first quarter to put the Saints up 4-3.
RPI's
Will Hatcher opened the scoring in the second quarter, but the Saints recorded eight straight, including the only four goals in the third quarter, to increase its lead to 12-4 heading into the final frame. Stew Hutchinson capped the run with a man-down goal with 32 seconds remaining.
The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, but the Engineers were unable to come back from the second and third quarter run by the Saints.
Cole led RPI with three goals, while Hatcher scored twice with an assist.
Chris Calicchia finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Engineers.
Brian Doughty made 21 saves for RPI and William Helm made eight stops on the other end for St. Lawrence, which held a 58-20 edge in shots, including a 35-15 in shots on goal.
With the win, the Saints improve to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while RPI falls to 1-2 on both accounts. St. Lawrence secured the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will host the third seed in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 5. Rensselaer closes out the campaign with a non-league game against Vassar on Wednesday at 4pm.
