SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sophomore
Rani Jones outlasted Megan Brown in a third-set tiebreaker and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team defeated Union College 5-4 in a Liberty League match. With the victory, RPI (1-2; 1-2 Liberty League) clinches a bid to the conference post-season tournament which begins on Wednesday. The Dutchwomen (2-4; 2-4) would have earned the berth with a victory.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Jones and split the first two sets with Jones at 6-1, 3-6. The third set was tied at 6-6 and Jones pulled it out 7-3 in the tiebreak for the victory.Â
Rensselaer also had singles wins by
Chloe Barr (No. 2) and
Tess Lubin (No. 6), along with doubles victories by Jones and Barr (No. 1) and Lubin and Vidhay Maran (No. 3).
The Engineers and Dutchwomen face each other on Sunday in a non-league match in Troy before RPI faces an opponent to be determined in the Liberty League Championship Semifinals on Wednesday.
