Softball Defeated in League Semifinal, 2-0

Ithaca's Beth Fleming throws no-hitter to end Engineers' season

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Beth Fleming threw a no-hitter to lead the Ithaca College softball team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Liberty League Semifinals, on Wednesday after at Kostrinski Field. With the win, the Bombers improve to 25-7 and advance to the league championship on Saturday at Rochester. The Engineers conclude their season at 10-5.

Fleming (Preston, CT/Norwich Free Academy) allowed three walks and struck out seven to record her second no-hitter of the season. She threw 117 pitches, inducing 10 fly ball outs and four groundball outs. RPI sophomore Alexis Cooke (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) nearly matched her, surrendering only one hit over 5.0 innings, also striking out seven and walking three.

The Bombers snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, after sophomore Allison Dell'Orto (East Islip, NY/East Islip) reached on an infield single with one away. After a walk, Ithaca executed a double-steal, with the throw to third skipping into left, allowing Dell'Orto to score and junior Julia Loffredo (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) moving all the way to third.

A second base on balls, put runners on the corners, before another error allowed Loffredo to scamper home from third, doubling the hosts' advantage. Sophomore Brooke Sroczinski (Raynham, MA/Bishop Feehan) retired the next batter on an infield pop-up, before freshman catcher Alex Ledger (North Smithfield, RI/North Smithfield) threw out her second potential base-stealer of the day to end the frame.

Fleming (12-6) was able to set the Engineers down in order into the top of the seventh to secure the victory. Sroczinski (5-3) was saddled with the loss, despite not allowing an earned run. She allowed one hit and two walks in her long inning of work.

Junior Erin Askins (Tehachpi, CA/Tehachpi) drew one of RPI's three walks, while graduate student Steph Cavallaro (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater Raynham Regional) and senior Kyla Anderson (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) had the others. Ledger threw out two of the five Ithaca stolen base attempts on the day.
