CANTON, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team collected 16 extra-base hits in sweeping St. Lawrence University in a Liberty League doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Saints Softball Field. With wins of 7-0 and 21-2, the Engineers improve to 6-4 overall (5-3 Liberty League), while the Saints drop to 5-20 (5-17 Liberty League).
The 21 runs in the nightcap sets a school record for runs in a conference game and was the most against any opponent since RPI defeated Pine Manor, 21-0, on March 16, 2011. The previous mark for scoring against a league foe was set in on March 13, 2003, when Rensselaer was victorious at Skidmore, 17-0.
Sophomore right-hander
Alexis Cooke (4-2) threw a 7.0-inning three-hitter in Game 1, surrendering just three singles and three walks, while striking out seven. Her counterpart, SLU's McKailey Lyndaker, gave up five runs (2 earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings.Â
The Engineers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, when graduate student
Steph Cavallaro doubled home junior

Freshman Liz Vizzini made it a 5-0 game in the third, singling to center and scoring graduate student
Maddie Provencher and pinch runner
Melissa Orlick.
RPI added single insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings to caping the scoring for the contest. Sophomore Cat Worthington collected the first of her six runs batted in on the day in the fifth inning, before Askins doubled home graduate student
Veronica DeStefano in the final frame.
Game 2 saw the Engineers pound out 12 extra-base hits, including five triples, which are tied for the ninth-most in a single Division III softball game and three shy of the NCAA record. Askins notched two of the three-baggers, while DeStefano, Worthington and grad student
Allie Hunt all contributed one apiece.
Five Engineers had at least three hits, with Hunt going 4 for 5 in the nigthcap, with three runs and three RBIs. Worthington, who went 3 for 3, was a double shy of hitting for the cycle, hitting her first collegiate home run and driving a game-high five runs.
