ERIE, Pa. - Two second period goals were enough to lift the Mercyhurst University women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Arena. With the win, the Lakers improve to 3-0, while the Engineers drop to 0-2.
For the second straight game, the Engineers outshot the hosts in the first period, with RPI notching a 12-8 shot advantage after 20 minutes.
In the second, the Lakers struck twice, with Alexa Vasko opening the scoring on the power play at 5:42 of the frame. Helpers on her second of the weekend went to Jordan Mortlock and Vanessa Upson.Â
Exactly five minutes later, Marielle Park doubled the lead with assists being credited to Sydney Petersen and Vasko.
Both goaltenders had solid games, with Jenna SIlvonen posting a 21-save shutout, while
Amanda Rampado turned away 27, including all 11 shots she faced in the third period.
RPI is back in action next weekend, when it visits the University of Vermont for a pair. Mercyhurst travels to Colgate for two on Friday and Saturday.
