UTICA, N.Y. – Junior
Simi Nambiar recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Utica College, at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. With the win, the 250th in program history, the Engineers improve 4-1-3 overall, while the Pioneers drop to 5-2.
The first chance of the game went to the hosts in the 12th minute, when Jacinta Kaminski got free on the right side of the penalty area, but her shot from an angle was kept out by RPI freshman goalkeeper
Sierra Skelding.
In the 30th minute, RPI senior striker
Whitney Wisnom ripped a left-footed shot from the left corner of the 18, but it whistled just over the bar. Ten minutes later, junior
Peyton Carney slipped a ball behind the defense to senior
Sonya Heldman, but her shot was held by Utica goalie Courtney Connolly.
The game was scoreless at the half, with the Engineers holding a 7-2 shot edge.
RPI wasted little time breaking the deadlock in the second half, as sophomore
Helen Worden finished a centering pass from senior
Erin Barnes for her first collegiate goal. The eventual game-winning tally came in the 47th minute.
Wisnom made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute after Nambiar won a loose ball in the midfield and sent it ahead. Wisnom beat her defender to the ball and calmly slotted home her team-lead sixth goal of the campaign.
Just four minutes later, the Engineers capitalized on a short clearance from a corner kick to take a 3-0 lead. Junior
Olivia Spector sent a corner in from the right that defected out to Nambiar at the top of the box. She settled with a touch, before rifling home her first collegiate goal, just inside the left post.
Senior
Gigi Mecca capped the scoring in the 82nd minute, finishing first time on a cross from the left end line from sophomore
Lauren Botwinik.
Skelding (3-1-3) made four saves for her second shutout of the year. Connolly (3-2) had 10 stops, before giving way to Karen Troche in the 73rd minute. Torche was credited with a single save.
RPI Is back in action on Saturday, when it hosts Skidmore College in a Liberty League contest (4:30pm). Utica hosts Alfred on Saturday afternoon (3pm).
