Women's Soccer Shuts Out New Paltz, 2-0

Sophomore Bryanna Swinson scores and assists to lead Engineers to first win

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Bryanna Swinson recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over SUNY New Paltz, on Sunday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-1-1, while the Hawks drop to 0-1-1.

Swinson broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, receiving a ball in from the right by freshman Brooke Miller, before combining with classmate Gwen Barnes to break free into the New Paltz penalty area. Swinson took a touch before slotting home her first collegiate goal into the right side of the net.

The Engineers doubled their lead in the 63rd minute, with Swinson playing the setup role. Lobbing a pass over the top of the Hawk's back line, Swinson found Miller, who was able to get a foot on the ball first and steer it past New Paltz goalkeeper Kyra Russo for a 2-0 lead. The tally was also the first of Miller's collegiate career.

New Paltz had solid chances in each half to get on the board, but on both occasions, RPI freshman keeper Sierra Skelding was able to tip the Hawks attempt off the crossbar.

Skelding (1-1-1) earned her first collegiate victory and clean sheet, making seven total saves, while Russo (0-1-1) had one stop at the other end of the field.

RPI is back in action next Sunday, when it hosts SUNY Cortland (1pm). New Paltz travels to Skidmore on Saturday (7pm).
