No. 7 Men's Soccer Defeated at Williams, 5-2

Ephs score four second half goals to hand Engineers first loss of 2021

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – William Nathan Song scored two goals to pace the Williams College men's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over No. 7 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Wednesday afternoon at Cole Field. With the win, the Ephs open 2021 at 1-0, while the Engineers are 0-1-1.

RPI opened the scoring in the just third minute of play, when sophomore Reggie Durden took advantage of a misplay by the Williams back line and stuck home his first collegiate goal from just inside the penalty area.

The Ephs equalized less than four minutes later, with Song collecting a loose ball in the box and sticking it past RPI senior goalkeeper Luke Brezak. Jamie Holland sent in the initial cross from the left, that was deflected to Holland for the seventh minute marker.

An own goal by Williams gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 20th minute. Junior Josh Gaudiano delivered a cross towards the near post and was headed into the top left corner of the net by one of the Williams defenders.

RPI took its one-goal to the break, despite being out-shot 5-2.

Song knotted the game for the second time in the 53rd minute, when he collected a loose ball in the RPI penalty area and fired into the right side of the net.

Eamon Gara Grady gave Williams the lead for good in the 59th minute, burying a close range header after the Engineers failed the clear a cross in from the right side. Eleven minutes later, Jake Saudek found Brady Foehl streaking into the box for a 4-2 advantage.

The Ephs capped the scoring in the 90th minute, when Keel Brissett finished first time of a cross from the left by Henry Osborn. Williams broke away on a 2-on-1 before finishing off the game's final goal.

Williams outshot the Engineers, 12-3, including 10-2 on goal. RPI won the corner kick battle, 3-2. Brezak (0-1-1) made five saves, while his counterpart, Michael Davis, did not make a stop.

Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday for its home opener against Plattsburgh State at East Campus Stadium (4pm). Williams visits Tufts on Saturday (2pm).
