Ashlyn O'Neil scored a career-high 19 points and classmate
Heather Converse scored 13 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team to a 57-55 victory over Clarkson University. The Engineers improve to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights drop to 2-10 and 1-5.
RPI trailed 16-12 after the first quarter and 26-24 at halftime before making 15 of 28 (48.3%) of its second half shots for the come-from-behind win. The Engineers were 9 of 18 in the third quarter when they took a 44-40 lead and then closed out the contest by making 6 of 13 shots in the fourth. Defensively, RPI held Clarkson to 34.5% (19 of 55) shooting overall and 30.9% (13 of 42) in the final three quarters. Rensselaer had 11 steals on 15 turnovers and held a 41-32 edge in rebounding.
O'Neil, a guard, was 9 of 12 from the field and 1 of 2 from the free throw line to earn game-high honors. She also had five rebounds, an assist and three steals in 34 minutes. Converse, a forward, scored on 5 of 9 shots while also registering a team-best five assists and four steals. Two of her game-high 10 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Lolo Reynolds, a junior guard, added eight points and seven rebounds in a team-high 37 minutes.
The Golden Knights put three players in double figures with Ruthie Nolan scoring 15 points, Elaina Porter collecting 12 and Cassidy Dumont tallying 11. Porter added six rebounds and four assists for Clarkson, which had seven steals on 17 RPI turnovers.
Both teams return to the court on Saturday at 2pm with the Engineers playing at St. Lawrence University and the Golden Knights hosting Ithaca College.
