TROY, N.Y. – The Brown University men's hockey team scored the final three goals of the game to earn a come-from-behind, 3-2, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Bears improve to 4-12-0 (4-7-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 10-14-3 (5-7-0 ECAC Hockey).
Junior Luke Krys (Ridgefield, CT / Salisbury) broke a 2-2 tie at 6:44 of the third period and Brown was able to hold off a late surge from the Engineers to earn three points in the ECAC Hockey standings. Skating up the right wing boards, Krys rifled a shot over the left shoulder of RPI graduate student goaltender
Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC / Trail Smoke Eaters) for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Engineers lifted Marshall for an extra skater inside the final two minute and wound up hitting the post in the final 30 seconds, but could not find the equalizing tally.
RPI scored the game's first two goals in the opening frame, with both coming on the power play. Senior captain
Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA / Lone Star Brahmas) redirected a point shot by sophomore
Lauri Sertti (Espoo, Finland / Amarillo Bulls) into the roof of the net to get the scoring started. The tally, which was Linden's third of the weekend was also his team-leading 11th of the year.
Junior
TJ Walsh (Shrewsbury, MA / Northeastern University) doubled the Engineers advantage at 15:55 of the frame, firing a shot from the left circle that defected off the arm of Brown freshman goaltender Mathieu Caron (Winchester, MA / Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and just over the line. Helpers on Walsh's third of the season went to classmate
Simon Kjellberg (Nashville, TN / Dubuque Fighting Saints) and sophomore
John Beaton (Stittsville, ON / Youngstown Phantoms).
A shot from the left wing boards by Bears freshman Matt Sutton (Pittsburgh, PA / Omaha Lancers) found its way through a screen to draw the visitors with 2-1 at 3:17 of the second period. Sophomore Jordan Tonelli (Armonk, NY / Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) picked up the lone assist on Sutton's first collegiate tally.
After the Engineers saw their shorthanded breakaway chance go awry in the early moments of the second period, the Bears capitalized on one of their own at 7:18 to pull even at 2-2. Senior Tristan Crozier (Calgary, AB / Nanaimo Clippers) jumped on a loose puck at his own blue line and skated in all alone, before lifting a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Caron (3-7-0) finished with 24 saves, including all 13 shots he faced in the third period. Marshall (8-11-2) had 13 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI went 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Bears were 0 for 2.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to No. 20 Harvard University (7pm). Brown travels to Princeton on Friday (1pm).
