Men's Hockey Falls in Mayor's Cup, 2-0

Engineers double up Dutchmen in shots, but Murphy posts shutout

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Brandon Estes had a goal and an assist to lead the Union College men's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the ninth annual Mayor's Cup game on Saturday afternoon at MVP Arena. With the win, the Dutchmen improve to 9-12-3, while the Engineers drop to 11-15-3.

Union opened the scoring at 7:27 of the first period on a power play goal by sophomore Liam Robertson (Courtice, ON). The Dutchmen worked the puck to the top of the circle for freshman Colin Graf (Lincoln, MA), whose shot was steered home by Robertson from just outside the crease. The tally, which was Robertson's team-leading 10th of the season, drew a secondary assist from Estes (Richardson, TX).

RPI started to pile up chances as the game went along, including a net drive from sophomore Jack Brackett (Manassas, VA / Powell River Kings) on which he wound up finding the right iron, with a little over eight minutes left in the second period. The Engineers outshot the Dutchwomen, 10-3, in the middle stanza.

Midway through the third, senior captain Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA / Lone Star Brahmas) found the left post with a shot from the right circle, while the Engineers were on their second of three power plays on the day.

The Dutchmen took holding penalty in the final minute of the third, giving RPI a 6-on-4 advantage, but could not sold Union junior netminder Connor Murphy (Hudson Falls, NY), who finished with 33 saves on the day. RPI freshman Jack Watson (Toronto, ON / Coquitlam Express) turned away 15 of the 16 shots he faced.

Estes potted an empty-netter from inside his own right circle with 1:21 left to cap the scoring. His fifth goal of the year came unassisted.

RPI is back in action on Tuesday night, when it travels to Dartmouth College (6pm). Union hosts Long Island University on Tuesday (7pm).
