TROY, N.Y. - The Liberty League weekly awards in men's basketball have been announced and two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been named. Senior
Mason Memmelaar is the Performer of the Week and sophomore
Avery Eugster is the Rookie of the Week.
In two games last week, both neutral site contests, Memmelaar (Middletown, NY / Pine Bush) led the No. 21 Engineers with 21.0 points per game. He made 51.7% (15 of 29) of his shots from the field while averaging 33.3 minutes. He also averaged a team-high 9.5 rebounds with five assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
On Wednesday against Oswego State in the first round of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament hosted by St. John Fisher, he scored 18 points with 13 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot in 33:30 of a 59-46 loss. The next day against Medaille in the consolation game, the forward had 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field and eight free throws, along with six rebounds and three assists in an 81-67 win.Â
Eugster (San Antonio, TX / Saint Mary's Hall), also a forward, made his first collegiate starts last week and averaged 5.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in 22.9 minutes per contest. He also had two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
He scored two points with a block and a steal in 15 minutes against the Lakers and then tallied eight points, along with a game-high 11 rebounds and two assists in 30:42 versus Medaille.
Through the first 10 games of the season, Euster is averaging 5.9 points and 5.0 rebounds in 19.3 minutes. He has also registered 14 assists, two steals and three blocks. Memmelaar has also played every game and leads RPI in scoring (16.0 points per game) and rebounding (7.0 per game). He is also first in steals with 12 and second in both assists (26) and blocked shots (6).
Rensselaer, which is 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference, travels to Ithaca College on Friday to face the Bombers at 7:30pm. The Engineers then play at Union College on Saturday at 4pm.
