TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Jack Brackett scored 41 seconds into overtime and
Jack Watson made 37 saves to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst University and a sweep of the two-game series with the Lakers. RPI won 6-3 on Friday and starts the season at 2-0. Mercyhurst drops to 0-4.
Brackett, a forward, scored his first goal of the season after collecting a rebound of a shot from defenseman
Kyle Hallbauer and beating Mercyhurst netminder Matt Lenz on Rensselaer's 36th shot of the night. The assist was the second of the game for Hallbauer, while
Jakob Lee also had a helper - his fifth point (2 goals, 3 assists) on the weekend.
Hallbauer and
Rory Herrman set up
Altti Nykanen for the first goal of the game late in the first period, but the Lakers tied it only 59 seconds later when Cade Townsend found the back of the net.Â
The score remained tied until midway through the second when the Engineers got an unassisted tally from defenseman
Nick Strom. Keanan Stewart knotted the game a period later to force the extra session.
Watson, a sophomore, backstopped the victory by saving 10 shots in the first period, 20 in the second, and seven in the third period. Lenz finished with 33 stops on the other end, including 11 in each of the first two periods and two in overtime.
