TROY, N.Y. - Junior forward
John Beaton scored with 28.1 seconds to play in regulation to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Dartmouth College in an ECAC Hockey contest at the Houston Field House.
Beaton's goal, his first of the season, came from right in front of the net and despite a defenseman covering him tightly. Senior defenseman
Kyle Hallbauer sent the puck toward the goal from the left point and Austin Heidemann deflected it. Beaton held off his defender and pushed the puck past Big Green goalie Cooper Black on what was RPI's 27th shot on the night.
Dartmouth got on the board first, scoring midway through the second period when Luke Haymes redirected a Tucker McRae pass from the top of the left circle behind RPI netminder
Jack Watson for a 1-0 lead at 9:25. Tyler Campbell, who picked up a loose puck after a blocked shot attempt, circled behind the net and sent a back hand pass to the left point, where McRae let it fly.
RPI knotted things up when
Ryan Mahshie scored on a rebound in front of the net. RPI's
Jakob Lee won a face off in the right circle in the offensive zone, sending the puck to Max Smolinski. The defenseman sent a quick pass to the blueline, where Hallbauer one-timed the puck on net. Black made the initial save but could not control the rebound and Mahshie knocked it in for his second goal in as many games.
Jack Watson finished with 15 saves for the win, while Black stopped 25 shots for the visitors.
The two teams were playing for the sixth time in 2022 after two regular season games and three post-season contests last year. RPI is now 5-1-0 in in 2022 and 7-1-0 its last eight overall with Dartmouth.
