Avery Eugster scored 19 points, three of his teammates also reached double figures, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team used an 18-5 second half run to pull away from SUNY Delhi on its way to defeating the Broncos 80-65 in a non-conference men's basketball game at East Campus Arena. The No. 20 Engineers improve to 3-0, while Delhi falls to 1-1.
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, the Broncos pulled to within four points, 53-49, on a 3-pointer by Marven Louissaint at the 9:52 mark. RPI answered quickly with three straight three-pointers of its own -
Dom Black at 9:14,
Chuck Clemons at 8:38, and
Will Rubin at 8:17 - to make it a 13-point game, 62-49.Â
Louissant made a jumper with eight minutes to play, but a Eugster layup pushed the advantage back to 13 points, 64-51, and it remained in double figures for nearly the rest of the game. Another basket by Eugster, two free throws from
Jonny Angbazo, and a triple from Black made it a 17-point margin, 71-54, with just under five minutes to play.Â
The Broncos pulled to within nine points, 74-65, on a pair of free throws from Jacob Beach with 1:24 to play but RPI scored the final six points for the 15-point victory.
Eugster was perfect from the floor, connecting on 7 of 7 shots, along with five free throws, while added a team-high six rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Clemons scored 17 points with five boards, Angbazo had 16 and five with an assist, three blocks, and a steal, and Rubin had 10 points with four rebounds and three assists.
Beach was the high scorer for the visitors with 12 points, along with five rebounds, while Lester McCarthy and Fauzi Cizmesija-Ulmer both had 11 points.
