POTSDAM, N.Y. - Jacob Schmid-Svejstrup scored twice and Ethan Haider stopped all 16 shots he faced to lead the Clarkson University men's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey game at Cheel Arena.
Clarkson and RPI headed to the first intermission scoreless, though both teams had brief power plays in the period. Â
To close out the second period, the Knights capitalized on a turnover at the RPI blueline when Mathieu Gosselin was able to tap the puck to Ayrton Martino to spark a 2-on-11 break. Martino slid the puck under a defender's stick to Schmidt-Svejstrup, beat Engineers netminder
Jack Watson to put the Knights up 1-0.
In the third, the Knights continued to pressure RPI, not giving the visitors much chance to build any momentum. With under 1:45 left in the period, the Engineers pulled Watson for an extra attacker and Schmidt-Svesjtrup notched his second of the game for a 2-0 lead. RPI earned a power play with 47 seconds left and again pulled Watson, but the Knights got another insurance goal with 10 seconds left when Erik Bargholtz scored.
Haider registered his first shut out of the season, while Watson had 17 saves. Clarkson (3-6-0, 1-1-0) was 0 for 1 on the power play and killed off all five chances for RPI (5-4-0, 1-3-0).
