GENEVA, N.Y. -
Avery Eugster scored in the paint off an inbounds play with less than a second remaining and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team defeated Hobart College 59-58 in a Liberty League contest at Bristol Gymnasium. The No. 19 Engineers improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Statesmen are 5-3 and 1-1.
Trailing by a point after a Hobart basket with 12.3 seconds remaining, Rensselaer's
Dom Black brought the ball up the court, drove to the baseline, and dished off a pass that was deflected out of bounds by a Statesmen defender with 3.3 second to play. The Engineers came out of a timeout with Black inbounding on the baseline. He found Eugster in the paint and the junior forward fought off a defender to get a right-handed jump hook shot into the net for the lead with 0.8 seconds remaining.Â
Hobart took two timeouts before inbounding from RPI's end of the court - a long pass that was caught but not shot before the clock ran out.Â
The home team took a 58-57 lead on a Jackson Meshanic basket in the paint that gave the senior exactly 1,000 career points. That bucket answered a Black left corner three pointer that put Rensselaer ahead 57-56 with 37.7 seconds to play.
Will Rubin set up the open shot by getting into the lane and kicking the ball out to his teammate.
A trey by Andrew Lynch on the Statesmen's previous possession made it 56-54 for the home team after
Jonny Angbazo knocked in a shot off the glass on RPI's possession before that.
Angbazo led Rensselaer with 17 points, while Rubin scored 14. Eugster scored 13 points and Black had a double-double of 10 points and eight rebounds.
For Hobart, Meshanic had 15 points and 10 boards and Patrick Walker had 11 and seven.
