TROY, N.Y. - Four student-athletes reached double figures in scoring, including
Heather Converse,who had a double-double, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated Clarkson University 60-50 in its final home game of the regular season. The Engineers improve to 5-16 overall and 4-12 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights drop to 5-16 and 4-11.
Converse, a junior forward, came off the bench to register 11 points and 12 rebounds in 34:16. Typically a starter who played a reserve role on Senior Day, she made 5 of 9 shots from the floor and a free throw. She also picked up two assists, two steals and a blocked shot for RPI, which took control of the game in the second half.
Lolo Reynolds and
Nicole DaPra, who are also juniors, had 13 points apiece, going 5 of 7 and 5 of 8 from the field, respectively. DaPra, who also came off the bench in deference to a senior, led the Engineers with six assists while pulling down six rebounds and recording a steal. Reynolds had a game-high five steals with a rebound and an assist. Junior
Ashlyn O'Neil had 10 points with two assists, a steal and a block in a rare reserve appearance.
For Clarkson, Lauren Bell had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds and Cassidy Dumont had 10 points.
With the score tied 25-25 at halftime, Rensselaer forced back-to-back steals to begin the third quarter - both of which Reynolds converted to take a 29-25 lead. The Knights quickly got to within one point, but six straight RPI points pushed the advantage to seven points.Â
The teams continued to go back-and-forth with Clarkson tying it at 35-35, but RPI got a layup from
Erin Doyle and a three pointer from
Ahnalese Pearson. DaPra eventually made it an eight-point game (45-37) with a basket from behind the arc with 2:16 left in the third. In total, the Engineers outscored the Golden Knights 22-15 in the frame.
The fourth quarter began with the home team scoring the first five points thanks to a pair of free throws from Reynolds and another triple from DaPra for a 12-point lead (52-40) just 46 second in. The margin got to as many as 13 points on two occasions and hovered around double digits for the final seven minutes.
Rensselaer visits RIT on Friday and William Smith on Saturday to close out the season. Clarkson has games remaining with William Smith (Monday), Union (Friday) and Skidmore (Saturday).
