Men's Swimming & Diving Remains in Third

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming & diving team had three of the top seven finishers in the 200 butterfly and Nicholas Stefanidis earned runner-up in the 100 breaststroke as the Engineers concluded the third day of the four-day Liberty League Championship in third place overall. The nine-school event wraps up on Saturday.

In the 200 butterfly, the first event of the evening's finals session, junior Tony Min set the school reocrd with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:50.31), but was closely defeated for second place (1:50.17) and the victory (1:49.78). He was in third through the first 50 yards and then moved to second in the next 50 before closing in third. He was joined in the A final by teammates Jake Fassora, who was fourth (1:53.22) and Matthew Youngbar, who was seventh (1:56.13).

RPI also had three swimmers in the B final with Lorenzo Gurri, Michael Lee and Fernando Gomez Fischer coming in ninth, 10th and 13th, respectively.

Stefanidis, a sophomore, earned second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.40. He held the lead through the first 50 (25.68) but could not hold off Brendan Kapp of Rochester Institute of Technology, who had a 29.43 to close and a 55.63 overall. RPI's Erik Dougherty was fifth by recording a 58.23. William Tan and Anthony Acciani competed in the B final in the 100 breast.

Placing third in the 800 free relay event was the unit of Andy Palmer, Gomez Fischer, Ethan Gadbois and Mike Dowd. They combined for a time of 6:57.62.

From the diving board, senior Matt Abraham had a third place finish from one meter with a total of 423.85, which was approximately 45 points ahead of the fourth place finisher.

Leading the meet is RIT, which as 1288 points. Ithaca is in second with 1166 and the five-time defending champion Engineers are third with 979. Vassar College sits in fourth with 655 points.

Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10am (swimming) and continue at 1pm (diving). The finals kick off at 6pm.
