ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team won each of the three doubles matches to gain control of a dual match with the University of Rochester and the Engineers followed with victories in three singles matches to defeat the Yellowjackets 6-3 at Goergen Athletic Center. The Engineers improve to 5-1, while the U of R drops to 0-1.
The tandem of
Krisia Flores Gonzalez and
Nitya Subramaniam got things rolling for the visitors by capturing the No. 2 doubles 8-1. The No. 1 pairing of
Alex Mednikova and
Lorna Flores Gonzalez made it 2-0 with an 8-4 win and the duo of
Brooke Bauer and
Sonya Khudyakov won in a tiebreak, 8-7 (7-1), for the sweep.
Rochester got to within 3-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, but Mednikova won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and Bauer clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. Subramaniam won at No. 3 for a 6-1 lead.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend when they visit Wellesley College on Saturday and Babson College on Sunday. Rochester hosts Colgate University next Sunday at 10am.
