Men's Basketball Falls in League Semifinals

TROY, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's basketball team led from start to finish on its way to a 70-53 win over top seed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Liberty League semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the ECAV Arena.
 
The fifth-seeded Thoroughbreds face third-seeded Vassar College on Sunday at 2pm at RPI.
 
Skidmore had four players in double figures. Tautvydas Kupstas led the way with 26 points. Ty Lamport and Greg Skoric scored 14 each, while Riley Greene added 10 points and five assists.
 
Senior Mason Memmelaer led RPI with 22 points and nine rebounds. Will Rubin scored 11.
 
The Thoroughbreds got out of the gate early using a 13-0 run to go up 20-6 with 11:22 to play. Kupstas had five of his 15 first half points during the run. The Engineers' national leading defense held Skidmore off the board for the next 5:46, while cutting the score to 20-14. The Thoroughbreds regrouped and took a 34-24 lead into the half.
 
Skidmore opened the second half with a 12-4 for a 46-28 lead with 16:10 left. RPI quickly came back with a 10-0 run make it 46-38 with 13:48 left. The Thoroughbreds settled in and took a 61-49 lead on a Kupstas layup at 5:11. The visitors kept the double digit lead the rest of the way.
 
All of Skidmore's scoring came from its starting five. The Engineers only had eight bench points.

Rensselaer drops to 21-5 and remains in the mix for an NCAA Tournament at-large berth. The Thoroughbreds improve to 16-10 and will receive an automatic bid to the national playoffs with a win over the Brewers.
