TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Megan Shay recorded a school record 10 points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 21-7 victory over SUNY Oneonta, on Sunday morning at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers open the season at 1-0, while the Red Dragons start 0-1.
RPI scored the first five goals in the game before the halfway point of the opening quarter. Shay (Rochester, MA / Old Rochester Regional) netted two during the opening run, while classmate
Rylie Maready (Colorado Springs, CO / Cheyenne Mountain) had a goal and an assist.
The Red Dragons answered with three straight tallies of their own to pull within 5-3 at the end of the first quarter. Senior Rachel Morris (East Greenbush, NY / Columbia) collected two of her team-high five tallies to keep Oneonta within striking distance.
Sophomore
Ella Graff (Boomington, MN / Bloomington Jefferson) then scored her first collegiate goal to open the second quarter and pus the RPI lead to 6-3. Senior
Alli McLaughlin (Glastonbury, CT / Glastonbury) registered one of her game-best three assists on the play.
Following a goal by Oneonta junior Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY / Pearl River) brought the visitors to within 6-4, the Engineers rattled off five in a row to close out the half with an 11-4 advantage. Graff and Shay each had two goals that helped RPI start to pull away.
Senior
Lily Murphy (Scotia, NY / Scotia-Glenville) opened the second half with her first collegiate goal to extend the Engineers lead to 12-4.
Another Morris goal stopped the RPI scoring run, but answered with two more from Shay another from Maready to open up a 15-5 lead. Shay and senior
Sabrina Torcellini (Branford, CT / Branford) scored to cap the third quarter, giving the hosts a 17-6 lead.
Morris potted her fifth goal at 3:20 of the fourth quarter, before the Engineers closed things out by registering the game's final five goals, including first career markers from sophomore
Gabbie Valle (Orlando, FL / Timber Creek) and freshman
Lauren DeLeo (Wycoff, NJ / Ramapo).
Junior
Olivia Kimball (North Hampton, NH / St. Thomas Aquinas) earned the win in goal for RPI, making four saves over the opening 30 minutes. She gave way to sophomore
Jenny Canfield (Great Falls, VA / Langley) in the second half, who turned away three shots. Oneonta sophomore goalie Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY / Hendrick Hudson) had 10 saves in defeat.
Shay's eight goals are tied for the second most in school history, behind RPI Athletics Hall of Famer, Bethany Weiser '98, who scored nine on April 2, 1995 in a 20-11 victory at Vassar. The game was RPI's first in 719 days and its first home contest in 1,155 days (3 years, 2 months).
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Westfield State (6pm). Oneonta visits St. Lawrence on Saturday (2pm).
