SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team limited Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to just one field goal in overtime to earn a come-from-behind 71-65 victory in Liberty League action on Friday night at Williamson Sports Center. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 11-6 overall (7-4 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 15-4 (9-3 Liberty League).
Skidmore used 50% shooting from the floor to turn a 34-29 halftime deficit into a 62-62 tie at the end of the regulation. A layup from Greg Skoric to open the extra session gave the Thoroughbreds a quick lead, but that was quickly erased by a three-pointer from RPI's
Patrick Mahoney to give RPI a 65-64 edge.
The Engineers went 0 for 4 over the final two minutes of action and Skidmore was able to pull away, thanks to 3 of 4 free throw shooting down the stretch and timely baskets from Kupas Tautvydas and Skoric.
RPI built its first half lead thanks to strong shooting from the floor and from beyond the arc. The Engineers shot 56% (14 for 25) from the field and 66.7% (4 for 6) from three, led by 12 points from
Jonny Angbazo and 10 from Mahoney. Riley Greene paced the hosts with 11 in the opening 20 minutes, firing home 4 of 7 from the field.
Mahoney finished with a team-best 21 points, while Angbazo (14), Mason Memelaar (13) and
Dom Black (10) all finished in double-figures. The Thoroughbreds were paced by Greene's game-high 25 points and six rebounds, while Skoric went for a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards.
Skidmore out-scored the Engineers 38-34 in the paint and collected 10 fast-break points to RPI's four.
Rensselaer returns to action tomorrow afternoon, when it visits Vassar College (4pm), while Skidmore hosts Ithaca College (4pm).
