Men's Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision to No. 2 QU

Bobcats first period goal holds up as Engineers fall in tight contest

HAMDEN, Conn. – Ethan Leyh scored the only goal of the game to give the second-ranked Quinnipiac University men's hockey team a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at Frank Parretti Jr. Arena. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 23-2-3 overall (12-1-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 12-17-3 (7-9-0 ECAC Hockey).

Leyh scored at 12:10 of the opening period on a shot from the left wall that found its way through traffic and into the net, past Engineers graduate student netminder Linden Marshall. The Bobcats worked around the zone to Gus van Nes, found Leyh in the left circle. He then fired a low shot that snuck in. A secondary helper went to Skyler Brind'Amour.

After allowing the opening tally, the Engineers picked up their play over the final two periods, but could not solve Quinnipiac goaltender Yaniv Perets, who stopped all 16 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Marshall had 29 stops at the other end of the ice, keeping RPI close throughout with a number of timely saves.

Lauri Sertti found himself alone in the left circle, midway through the second, but he was unable to net the equalizer as his shot was stopped by Perets. Jakub Lacka and John Beaton also turned in second period chances for the Engineers.

In the third, Ture Linden and Lacka were both denied on back-to-back chances, after Marshall made a breakaway stop at the other end.

The Engineers finished 0 for 1 on the power play, while the Bocats were 0 for 3.

RPI returns to action on next weekend, when it hosts Colgate and Cornell at the Houston Field House. Quinnipiac welcomes Brown to town on Tuesday.
