Joe Curci came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team past Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 9-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-5 overall, while the Trailblazers drop to 6-7.
With runners on first and second and nobody out, Curci lifted a base hit into right center field that plated
Jack Moncur for a 9-8 victory.
A back-and-forth affair saw the Engineers plate four runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 lead.
Joey Saia drove a two-run double to left center, before
Jake Defayette reached on an infield single that plated Saia later in the frame.
MCLA crept back to within 5-4, before post a four-run inning of their own in the seventh. Rob Correia got the rally started with an RBI-single up the middle, before Randy Adams and Isaiah Mack each collected run-scoring hits for an 8-5 lead.
Fifth-year senior
Hudson Livesey cut into the lead with a homer to center in the bottom half, before opening a ninth-inning rally with an RBI-single to left. Pinch-hitter Aiden Hicks then tied the game at 8-8 when he reached on an infield single that scored Livesey from third.
Curci finished 3 for 5 with a double, a run and an RBI, while Livesey was 3 for 4, with three runs and two RBIs. MCLA was led offensively by Austin Rachiele, who went 3 for 5 with three runs scored out of the lead-off spot.
RPI starter
Alex Vallee allowed four runs (3 earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out two and walked two. Reliever
Cameron Heuer (1-0) worked the final 3.0 innings, giving up just two hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
Aidan Brett (2-1) suffered the loss for the Trailblazers, giving up one unearned run on one hit in 0.2 innings.
The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they open Liberty League play with a three-game series against the University of Rochester. Play begin on Saturday with a doubleheader (1pm). MCLA travels to Sage for two on Saturday (12pm).
