MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Senior
Josh Cohen won two events and five others had runner-up finishes for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team, which began the season at the J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic hosted by Wesleyan University. The meet was non team scoring.
Cohen won the discus with a maximum toss of 43.70 meters, which came on his first attempt, and the hammer with a throw of 43.70 meters. He reached that distance on his third attempt to defeat 18 others. Finishing third in the hammer was RPI graduate student
Justin Park, who reached 42.71 meters on his third try. Park also placed third in the shot put with an effort of 12.87 meters.
Rensselaer's jumpers had a pair of runner-up finishes with
Robert Smith going 6.58 meters in the long jump and
Jacob Haqq reaching 13.10 in the triple. Haqq hit the 13.10 mark on his second attempt and Smith reached his mark on his first. He trailed the winner by only .08 meters.
Junior
Joey Hinckley led a group of four Engineers in places two through four in the pole vault. He bested the bar at 4.00 meters, doing so on his second attempt, with teammate
Tyler Knapp coming in third at 3.85 meters.
Eoin O'Gara was fourth and
Casey Selinske was fifth.
Rensselaer boasted five of the top six finishers in the 10000 meters with sophomore
Caleb Watson finishing second overall with a time of 32:46.32.
Jonathan Craun was third in 32:53.55 and he was followed by
Will Hawkins (4th),
Jay Parker (5th) and
Mitchell Dailey (6th) in the 12-competitor race.
Bate Egbe finished second in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 15.94 and
Devin Smith was third in the 400 Hurdles in 1:01.47.
