TROY, N.Y. – 
Erika Holowka and 
Alexis Cooke both reached career-highs in strikeouts to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Castleton University, on Saturday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 6-1 and 3-2, the Engineers improve to 8-8 overall, while the Spartans drop to 6-3.
In Game 1, Holowka matched her career mark for strikeouts in a game with 11 over 7.0 innings in pitching a complete game.
The Engineers struck first with a single run in the top of the first. Junior 
Gabby Comeau lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right that plated 
Jessica Torch from third.
RPI added three in the top of the fourth, beginning with an RBI-double from Comeau, that brought home senior 
Erin Askins. Sophomore 
Liv Vizzini followed with a double of her own to left center, scoring Comeau from second. Junior 
Brooke Sroczinski capped the rally with a third double that nearly left the yard to straight away center, bring around Vizzini for a 4-0 advantage.
The Spartans got one back in bottom of the inning thanks to a double off the fence in center by Kyle Wright.
The Engineers answered in the following frame, scoring two runs on another Vizzini double, which was ripped right down the right field line. The run-scoring base hit gave RPI a 6-1 lead.
Holowka was able to put three more zeros up to on the board to secure her fifth victory of the season.
In Game 2, sophomore 
Caroline Peel came through with an RBI-single in the top of the second to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead. Peel then delivered a nearly identical base hit, through the right side of the infield, to put RPI ahead 2-0 in the fourth.
Castleton climbed right back into the game with solo home runs from Jamie Boyle and Allison Almond in the fourth and fifth to knot the score at 2-2.
The Engineers then took advantage of a miscue in the field with runners on the corners retake the lead at 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Sroczinski came home on the play to give RPI the lead for good.
Sroczinski moved to pitcher in the sixth and was able to chuck 2.0 shutout innings to earn her first save of the season. She struck out three and walked one. Cooke (2-4) allowed just two runs on five hits over 5.0 innings, registering a career-high eight strikeouts and no walks.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Williams for two (2pm). Castleton travels to Skidmore on Tuesday (3pm).
