Connor Glosner broke a 9-9 tie with 18 seconds left in the third quarter and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team notched two of the three goals scored in the fourth quarter to defeat Eastern University 12-10 in a non-league contest at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex Stadium Field. The Engineers keep their perfect record intact at 5-0, while the Eagles drop to 0-4.
With the game tied 7-7 at halftime, Eastern took the lead on a goal by Connor Killion midway through the third quarter. RPI needed just 13 seconds to knot things up again as
Luke Murphy scored man-down.
Alex Ehrenstein put Rensselaer ahead 5:15 later with his second goal of the game.
Avery Porter tied the game at 9-9 with 1:03 to play in the frame but Glosner scored unassisted for a lead the Engineers would not relinquish.
Ryan Raftery made it 11-9 when he took a feed from Murphy and scored 58 seconds into the fourth quarter and
Tyler Nalls scored his game-high third goal off an assist from
Devon Boyko with 9:39 to play.
Killion scored again for the Eagles to make it 12-10 with 6:45 to play, but RPI limited them to only one shot on goal for the rest of the game.
RPI started the game by scoring the first three goals and it held a 4-1 lead before Eastern fought back to eventually take a 6-5 lead with 8:34 to play in the first half.
Dan Myers tied the game for Rensselaer and
Trevor Tocchet made it 7-6 for the Engineers before the Eagles scored man-up with 2:13 left in the second quarter.
Nalls had three goals on seven shots (5 on goal) and
Rhys Zoldi also had three points, tallying once with two assists. Ehrenstein had five ground balls to go with his two tallies, while
Angelo Venuto led all players with 13 pickups, in part by winning 16 of 26 face offs.
Joseph Perry stopped eight of the 11 shots he faced and
Ricky Bokavich added a pair of saves for Rensselaer, which has won four straight games away from home.
Ethan Myers made 18 saves for the Eagles, who got four goals from Killion and two goals and two assists from Nicholas Fanelli.
RPI returns to Troy on Wednesday and hosts MIT on Saturday (1pm). Eastern is also back in action next Saturday at 1pm when it travels to Arcadia University.
