Erika Holowka threw a complete game to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a doubleheader split at SUNY Cortland, on Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers, who dropped the opener 10-2, before winning, 6-2, move to 15-13 overall, while the Red Dragons are now
Game 2 saw the Engineers get on the board first, scoring a run in the opening frame on a double-steal and a Cortland throwing error. The Red Dragons tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, when Halle Wright plated Elaina Ornstein with a groundout to second.
Three scoreless frames followed, before Rensselaer broke the game open with a five-run fifth. With two outs and a runner on first, the Engineers went to work, as
Ryleigh Greenwald walked and
Jessica Torch reached on an infield single to load the bases.
Catherine Worthington then laced a single to center scoring two.
Erin Askins followed with an RBI-double, before
Gabby Comeau capped the rally with a two-run single to make it 6-1.
Holowka was able to keep the Red Dragons at arm's length the rest of the way, allowing a pair of hits in each ensuing inning, but did not let a run come across. For the game, she surrendered one run on 10 his over 7.0 innings, striking out five without a walk.
Askins went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, while Worthington finished 1 for 2 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs.
In Game 1, the hosts scored in every inning en route to a five-inning victory. A Gina Meyers double scored the opening run of the contest in the top of the first, before Wright brought a second across with a groundout to short.
After getting a third run in the bottom of the second that was answered by RPI in the top of the third, the Red Dragons created some separation in the bottom half, scoring five times to take an 8-1 lead. Tori Reich delivered the biggest blow in the frame, driving home a pair with a double to the gap in left center.
RPI relief pitcher
Brooke Sroczinski took over for
Alexis Cooke in the fourth and promptly surrendered a walk and a two-run homer to Alyssa Finno to make it a 10-1 contest.
The Engineers pulled one back in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI-double of the bat of Worthington, which scored
Mikayla O'Neill, who scored both RPI runs in the game.
RPI is back on the diamond on Friday, when it hosts Skidmore College at Doris Robison Field (2pm). The Red Dragons welcome SUNY Plattsburgh to town on Friday (3pm).
