TROY, N.Y. –
Sabrina Torcellini and
Ella Graff combined for 10 points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to an 18-5 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), on Saturday afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-2 overall (2-1 Liberty League), while the Tigers drop to 4-6 (2-3 Liberty League).
After McKenna Joint gave the visitors a 1-0 lead, RPI scored three straight to take a 3-1 lead. Senior
Christina Rogers got the run started by stealing the ball inside the restraining line and burying her first goal of the season.
Joint ended the scoring run to draw within 3-2 with 8:45 left in the first quarter, before the two teams traded goals.
Rensselaer closed out the first half on a 6-0 scoring rally, which included two goals and two assists from Torcellini, to give the Engineers a 9-3 lead at the break.
Graff then opened the second half with her second of the game for a 10-3 advantage, before extra player goal by RIT's Colette Rigas ended the scoring drought.
RPI then put five more home over a span of six minutes in the third quarter to put the game away.
Lisa Boehmer tallied two during the stretch, while Graff netted her third and fourth of the day, giving her 22 on the year – the last of which gave RPI a 15-4 lead.
Aldyn Savage stuck home her 21st of the year to complete the scoring for RIT with 16 second left in third.
The Engineers scored all three goals in the fourth quarter, including
Molly McDonald's second career tally.
Olivia Kimball (4-0) picked up the win in goal for RPI, making three saves in the first half.
Jenny Canfield had one stop in 20 minutes of play, while
Julianna Lucas turned away the only two shots she faced in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
RPI is back in action on Tuesday, when it hosts Bard in a rescheduled Liberty League game (6pm). The Tigers visit William Smith on Wednesday (4pm).
