Shay Propels Women's Lax To Victory

Junior Megan Shay scored nine goals to lead Engineers past Rochester, 15-11

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior Megan Shay tied a school record with nine goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over the University of Rochester, on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 10-4 overall (6-3 Liberty League), while the Yellowjackets drop to 5-8 (2-7 Liberty League).

Shay propelled RPI to an early 2-0 lead, scoring the first two goals of the contest. Rochester got on the board with 7:56 left in the opening frame, when Brooke Fiannaca netted the first of her team-high four tallies on the day.

Rylie Maready answered by scoring off the ensuing draw to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage. Grace Crochiere netted an extra-player goal a minute later to cut the deficit to 3-2, before Shay made it 4-2 less than a minute later.

The Yellowjackets then went a 3-1 run to knot the game at 5-5 with 7:23 remaining in the first half. Maready and Lisa Boehmer then potted the last two goals of the first half to give the Engineers a 7-5 lead at the break.

After Fiannaca made it a one-goal game right out of halftime (7-6), RPI went on a 4-0 scoring run to open up an 11-6 lead. Freshman Lauren DeLeo got the spurt started, before Shay stuck home three in a row.

Rochester then put together a 5-1 run over a span of 10 minutes to draw within 12-11 with 11:46 left in the game.

The Engineers had the answer at the both ends of the field down the stretch, shutting the Jackets out the rest of the way, while scoring the game's final three goals. Shay scored her record-tying ninth with 10:40 on the clock, giving her 46 for the season, while senior Sabrina Torcellini netted her 22nd and 23rd of the year.

Olivia Kimball made five saves to pick up the win between the pipes for RPI, while Ava Saffren had 12 stops for the hosts.

Shay's 46 tallies are the third most in program history and are five away from Alisa Peterson's 51 from the 2013 campaign. Her 51 points are tied for seventh. With her 11 draw controls, Maready now has 101 for the season in 14 games.

RPI closes out its regular season schedule on Saturday at home against Clarkson University (3pm). Rochester travels to Union next Saturday (2pm).
