ITHACA, N.Y. –
Liv Vizzini drove in the only run of the game to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a 1-0 victory over Ithaca College, in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Kostrinsky Field. The Engineers, who dropped Game 1, 4-3, move to 21-15 overall (8-4 Liberty League), while the Bombers are now 18-11 (9-1 Liberty League).
In the nightcap, Vizzini's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference. With one out,
Erin Askins singled up the middle on a 3-0 pitch.
Gabby Comeau followed with a base hit, putting runners on the corners for Vizzini. She lifted a fly ball to right, that brought Askins home.
Junior
Alexis Cooke came on to earn her first save of the season, allowing just one walk and striking out three to hand Ithaca its first conference defeat of the season.
RPI starter
Brooke Sroczinski (5-2) hurled 5.0 shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks, while striking out six. Her counterpart, Anna Cornell (9-3), surrendered one run on five hits in 7.0 innings. She notched eight strikeouts and one walk.
Game 1 saw the Bombers score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a walk-off victory. Junior Kailey Collins homered to right field with a runner aboard and one away.
The contest began with three scoreless innings, before Ithaca broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bombers took advantage of an RPI error before Sela Sheinman hit a sac fly to right, bringing home Julia Loffredo.
RPI scored all three of its runs with one swing from Comeau in the top of the sixth, when she ripped a bases-clearing double to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Askins,
Catherine Worthington and
Jessica Torch all came around to score on Comeau's team-leading 14th two-base hit of the year.
Junior Riley Piromalli (6-7) earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings, striking out nine and walking two. Senior
Erika Holowka (9-5) surrendered four runs (3 earned) on just two hits in 6.1 innings. She had eight strikeouts and one walk.
RPI is back on the diamond next Saturday, when it hosts St. Lawrence for its final Liberty League doubleheader of the season (1pm). The Bombers travel to Geneseo for two on Tuesday (2:30pm).
