Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 16 Men's Lacrosse Comes Back to Win 13-12

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 16 nationally-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team scored six of the final seven goals against Ithaca College on Saturday to earn a come-from-behind 13-12 win and clinch the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championship. RPI improves to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference and faces RIT, the top seed, in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. The Bombers, who would have secured the opportunity to play the Tigers, conclude their season with a 10-6 overall record and a 3-4 league record.

Prior to first face off, the Bombers honored it's 2022 senior class and they fed off the early crowd energy to score the first three goals of the game. Connor Brumfield tallied the opening goal off a nice dish from defenseman Demetri Lowery, Drew Turner netted an unassisted effort and Kyle Proctor put the Bombers up 3-0 with 9:47 left in the first quarter.

The Engineers answered with goals from Luke Murphy and Connor Glosner about two minutes apart before Ithaca's Jared Sedock tallied to close the first quarter.

Trey Froehlich pulled RPI to within 4-3 and 5-4 before a man-up goal by Glosner with 11:39 left in the half knotted the score at 5-5. Both programs locked it down defensively during the final 10 minutes of the second quarter as each only allowed one goal and the score was tied 6-6 at the halftime break. Froehlich scored his third of the quarter and 21st of the season before the Bombers' Jake Erickson netted his 40th goal of the year to equalize it just before the break.

Ithaca controlled the first 10 or so minutes of the third quarter and established a four-goal lead (11-7) on goals by John Sramac, Erickson, Charlie Niebuhr and a pair by Willy Wright. Ryan Raftery pulled the visitors to within three with 3:45 to play in the third.

Angelo Venuto made it 11-9 when he won the opening face off of the fourth and scored. Raftery followed at 12:16 and Cooper Urban tied things at 11-11 at 12:05. Froehlich's fourth of the game made it 12-11 with 8:27 to play and Raftery notched a third just 1:22 later for a two-goal lead. The Bombers got to within one with 4:59 to play but could not get the equalizer as RPI controlled possession for the majority of the frame.

Venuto had 13 face off wins, nine ground balls, a goal and two assists, while Froehlich scored four times and Raftery three. Murphy added a goal and two assists. Freshman Joseph Perry had 16 saves in the win.

Ryan Laforty had 13 stops on the other end for the Bombers, who got two goals and an assist from Erickson, Proctor and Sramac.
