TROY, N.Y. – Juniors 
Alexis Cooke and 
Brooke Sroczinski each recorded career-highs in strikeouts to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a sweep of a non-league doubleheader with Utica University on Tuesday afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 8-2 and 10-4, the Engineers improve to 12-10 overall, while the Pioneers drop to 6-14.
Cooke struck out the side in the first and second innings, while RPI was able to a total of five runs. The Engineers took advantage of three errors in the first, before senior 
Erin Askins delivered a two-run double in the second.
The Pioneers pulled within 5-2 in the third, thanks to an RBI-single from Emily Joss and an infield hit by Alyssa Barbato that brought home Julia Phelps, who had walked earlier in the frame.
Rensselaer tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth, as 
Madie Campagna singled home 
Caroline Peel and 
Brooke Sroczinski to cap the scoring.
Cooke (4-5) allowed two runs on four hits over 7.0 innings, with 13 strikeouts and three walks. Kylie Murray (5-5) gave up eight runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings, picking up two strikeouts and walking three.
In Game 2, Utica plated two in the top of the first. Abigail Sacks came through with an RBI-single that wound up scoring both runs thanks to an RPI miscue in the field.
The Engineers answered with a five-run bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Peel. Campagna followed with a runs-scoring single, before 
Chloe Lewandowski doubled to the gap in left center, scoring Campagna.
Joss and Murray came through with run-scoring hits in the top of the fifth to draw within 7-4.
RPI came right back, however, plating three in the bottom of the sixth. 
Liv Vizzini drove in Askins with a single to right, before Peel also singled the other way, scoring pinch-runner 
Megan Wampner. The Engineers capped the scoring in the contest with a run coming home on a Pioneers error.
Sroczinski (3-1) threw a 7.0-inning complete game, allowing four runs (3 earned), striking out 11 and walking three.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they open up Liberty League play against the University of Rochester (1pm). Utica hosts Keuka College on Saturday (1pm).
