Lisa Boehmer each notched five points to pace the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 victory over Vassar College, on Friday afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-2 overall (4-1 Liberty League), while the Brewers drop to 3-7 (1-4 Liberty League).
RPI used a 7-0 first half run to open up a 9-1 first half advantage. Junior
Megan Shay (Rochester, MA / Old Rochester Regional) got the scoring started for the Engineers with the first of her two goals on the day. Senior
Alli McLaughlin (Glastonbury, CT / Glastonbury) then made it 2-0 before Vassar was able to get on the board with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter.
The Engineers then scored seven unanswered goals, including two in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter. Boehmer (Vernon Hills, IL / Vernon Hills) and freshman
Claire Shemo (Wallingford, CT / Ethel Walker School) each had two goals during the scoring run, while Torcellini (Branford, CT / Branford) dished out three of her game-high five assists.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Ashley Roberts (Bala Cynwyd, PA / Lower Merion) netted the Brewers' second goal of the game to draw within 9-2.
RPI answered with back-to-back tallies from
Sophie Goddard (Lincoln, RI / Cumberland) and Shay to push the lead back to 11-2 with 10:56 remaining the third.
The Brewers then netted three of the next four goals to make it a 12-5 game with 31 second to go in the quarter. RPI closed out the frame by scoring twice in the final 19 seconds, with Maready and Shay tallying. The goal for Shay was her team-leading 30th of the season.
Each team was able to find the back of the net three times in the fourth, as the Engineers were able to see out the win.
Maready finished with three goals and two assists for five points. She notched seven shots (5 on goal) with a game-high 16 draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Boehmer collected three goals, two assists, our shots (all on goal), four ground balls, two draws and one caused turnover.
Vassar was led offensively by freshman Emma Torkelson (Madison, NJ / Madison), who netted her second, third and fourth goals of the season. Three other Brewers had two points, including junior Annie Uyeki (North Haven, CT / North Haven), who scored twice.
In goal, RPI junior
Olivia Kimball (Northampton, NH / St. Thomas Aquinas) improved to 6-0 by making two saves in 30 minutes. Her counterpart, Lauren Johns (Havertown, PA / Haverford), was stellar in net, turning away 15, including 10 in the first half.
RPI is back in action on Tuesday, when it travels to Skidmore College (7pm). The Brewers visit Ithaca College tomorrow (4pm).
