CHESTER, Pa. - Junior Nia Goddard accomplished a personal-best in the women's 5000 meters and classmate
Matt Lecky did the same in the men's 1500 at the Swarthmore College Last Chance Meet that was held at the Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on the campus of Widener University. They were among 10 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes who competed.
Goddard and Morgan Lee both ran the 31-competitor 5000 with Lee, also a junior, earning runner-up with a time of 17:12.07. She was five seconds off the winning time of 17:07.39 by Scranton's Jessica Hoffman and eight seconds ahead of the third place finisher, Camryn Wennersten of the Garden State Track Club. MIT's Izzi Gengaro was fourth (17:21.42) and Goddard finished fifth in 17:22.21. The sixth place runner, Diana Vizza of Johns Hopkins, crossed in 17:26.23.
Lecky finished eighth of 23 runners in the 1500 meters, but was third among Division III racers. The event was won by Dage Minors from Bermuda in 3:45.46. Lecky finished in 3:48.30, which trailed only Jamie Moreland of Haverford (3:47.10) and Arthur Beyer of Johns Hopkins (3:48.30) among those from Division III institutions.
Graduate student
John Reed earned the top finish among Rensselaer's men, coming in third in the 37-competitor 5000 meters. He trailed only Lachlan Wellington, who ran unattached (14:22.46), and Gavin McElhennon of Hopkins (14:30.59) with his time of 14:31.27. Teammate
Cory Kennedy was sixth overall with a 14:40.31.
Grey Conover also broke 15 minutes to finish 17th (14:56.13).
And in the men's 3000 Steeplechase, which had 16 participants,
Jason Gibbons had a ninth place finish with a time of 9:26.29.
