TROY, N.Y. – Senior Grace Heiting recorded 10 points to lead the Union College women's lacrosse team to a 19-11 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the Liberty League Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Dutchwomen improve to 7-9 overall, while the Engineers conclude their season at 11-5.
After RPI took the opening draw straight down the field and scored just nine seconds in, Union responded with a 6-0 run to take a 6-1 lead with 7:29 left in the first quarter. Heiting (Woodbury, MN / Gentry Academy) netted two of those tallies, while sophomore Anna Smith (Portsmouth, NH / Portsmouth) collected two goals of her own.
Freshman
Ella Graff (Bloomington, MN / Bloomington Jefferson) end the scoring run with her 26th goal of the season with 6:17 remaining in the opening frame, with senior
Sabrina Torcellini (Branford, CT / Branford) picking up the first of her game-high three assists on the night.
Following an answering tally from Union freshman Greta Maurer (Merrimack, MA / Pentucket Regional), RPI fought back with two straight markers from juniors
Sophie Goddard (Lincoln, RI / Cumberland) and
Rylie Maready (Colorado Springs, CO / Cheyenne Mountain).
Heiting stuck home the last goal of the first quarter and the Dutchwomen put together a 5-2 run to open up a 13-6 advantage late in the half. Torcellini buried her 29th of the season with nine seconds left in the half, cutting the deficit to 13-7.
The teams traded goals early in the second half, until Union sophomore Dana Nelson (Westwood, MA / Dexter Southfield) Heiting scored two in a row to take a 17-9 lead with 8:45 left in the game.
RPI freshman
Lauren DeLeo (Wyckoff, NJ / Ramapo) took a feed from Torcellini and netted her 20th of the season to draw the hosts within 17-10 with 8:04 to go, but Heiting and junior Drew Charlton (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA / Manchester-Essex) answered with two in a row.
Goddard potted the final goal of the contest – her ninth of the season – with 38 seconds on the clock.
Heiting led all scorers with eight goals and two assists. Charlton had four goals, while junior Dana Truini (Wrentham, MA / King Philip Regional) collected two goals and one assist. RPI was led by Torcellini (2 goals, 3 assists) who had five points. Maready scored two goals and assisted on another, while
Megan Shay (Rochester, MA / Old Rochester Regional) had two goals and an assist to extend her single-season goal record to 55.
Union goalkeeper Jenna Paszek (Hatfield, MA / The Kent School) improves to 4-4 on the year, making nine saves. The Engineers saw sophomore
Jenny Canfield (Great Falls, VA / Langley) stop six in 38:45, while freshman
Julianna Lucas (Hopkinton, MA / Hopkinton) had three saves in just over 21 minutes.
The Dutchwomen advance to Saturday's Liberty League Semifinals, where they will face top-seeded William Smith (TBA).
