ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior
Brooke Sroczinski struck out a career-high 13 batters and senior
Ryleigh Greenwald drove in three to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a 5-2 victory over Ithaca College in 9 innings, on Friday afternoon at Southside Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 25-16 overall and advance in the Liberty League Tournament, while the Bombers conclude their season at 21-17.
The Engineers broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fifth inning, when sophomore
Mikayla O'Neill reached on an error and was double-home by Greenwald, who ripped a line drive into the left field corner.
RPI threatened to add to its lead in top of the seventh, getting a walk to and a single to start the frame. O'Neill dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put two in scoring position, but Ithaca starter Riley Piromalli was able to get a strikeout and a fly out to get out of the inning.
The Bombers pulled even in the bottom half, when shortstop Tava Kasper homered to left with two outs in the inning.
After a scoreless eighth, the Engineers erupted for four runs to take a 5-1 lead. With two aboard, Greenwald doubled to right center, scoring O'Neill and
Caroline Peel. A bunt single from
Jessica Torch scored Greenwald after a Bombers error.
Catherine Worthington followed with an RBI-single back through the box, before
Gabby Comeau capped the rally with an run-scoring groundout.
In the bottom half, Ithaca pulled a run back on an RBI-single from Hudson Hassler. The Bombers then loaded the bases to bring the winning run to the plate with two away. The Engineers went to senior
Erika Holowka to record the final out and she came through, inducing a ground out to first to end the game.
Sroczinski took the no-decision, allowing one run on two hits over 7.0 innings. Striking out 13 and walking three, she threw 122 pitches. Classmate
Alexis Cooke (9-8) got the win, surrendering one run on three hits over 1.2 innings.
RPI will take on the hosts from the University of Rochester tomorrow (12pm), needing to win two games to win the Liberty League Championship.
